Home > Rodkicker >

Rodkicker – Seldén’s range of rigid vangs – is a telescopic rod fitted between the lower end of the mast and the boom. Rodkicker prevents the boom from dropping into the cockpit when reefing. When fitted with a Seldén gas spring, it lifts the boom when the kicking strap is released. Excellent for trimming the main in light air.
FAQ
Q: My RK does not push upwards as advertised.
A: Did it ever push up? Was it ever fitted with a gas spring?
Q: Can I dispense with the topping lift?
A: Yes, when sailing. The RK is a sailing aid, not a parking system. If a gas kicker is purely pulled down by the mainsheet for stowage, the boom can move athwartships – compressing the spring each time it swings. This is not safe for the crew.
The best way to stow (without a topping lift) is to secure the main halyard to the boom end. This provides firm opposition to the mainsheet, and centres the boom.
Q: Does the gas spring need refilling?
A: No. It is exactly the same as a hatchback car’s tailgate spring.
Q: How long do the spring last?
A: Guaranteed for two years from date of purchase.
Q: Can I fit the Gas spring myself?
A: Yes. Needs no tools. Just remove from the boom. Push the two black springs in with biro’s or similar. Fit spring as per the included instructions. Reattach to the kicker bracket. Lift the boom to a high angle, and attach the upper end.
